BIO 4010 Description

This course covers principles of microbiology with emphasis on microorganisms and human disease. Topics include an overview of bacteriology, virology, and immunology.The major themes are: general principles for growth, evolution and classification of microorganisms, microorganisms in disease and immune response to microorganisms, and medical treatments directed at microorganism (antibiotics and vaccines).Students will be expected to develop an understanding of these topics, and be able to use them in class, in the laboratory, and in exams. Laboratories are designed to give the student the basic laboratory techniques necessary to identify microorganisms. This course is a writing intensive course.Students will be expected to extrapolate from lecture and laboratory material to describe and discuss microbial replication cycles, disease and treatments in several written lab reports.In addition students will write a research paper discussing how microbes have shaped human history.
